Economic Survey GDP Growth Projections
India’s real GDP is estimated to grow by 6.4% in FY2024-25, aligning closely with its decadal average. Looking ahead, the survey projects GDP growth between 6.3% and 6.8% for FY2025-26, contingent on factors such as rural demand, agricultural output, and stable macroeconomic conditions.
Sectoral Performance
- Agriculture: The sector is expected to rebound with a growth of 3.8% in FY2024-25. Key drivers include horticulture, livestock, and fisheries. Notably, the Kharif foodgrain production for 2024 is anticipated to reach 1,647.05 lakh metric tonnes, marking an increase of 89.37 lakh metric tonnes over the previous year.
- Industry: The industrial sector is estimated to grow by 6.2% in FY2024-25. This growth is supported by strong performances in construction activities and utilities such as electricity, gas, and water supply.
- Services: The services sector continues to exhibit robust growth, projected at 7.2% for FY2024-25. This is driven by healthy activity in financial services, real estate, professional services, public administration, and defense.
Inflation and Fiscal Health
Retail headline inflation has softened to 4.9% in April-December 2024, down from 5.4% in the previous fiscal year. The survey anticipates that India’s consumer price inflation will gradually align with the target of around 4% in FY2025-26.
Unemployment and Social Indicators
The unemployment rate has declined to 3.2% in 2023-24 from 6.0% in 2017-18. Additionally, government health expenditure has increased from 29.0% to 48.0%, while the share of out-of-pocket expenditure in total health expenditure has decreased from 62.6% to 39.4% between FY2014-15 and FY2021-22.
Policy Recommendations
The survey advocates for a systematic deregulation strategy to accelerate and sustain economic growth. It emphasizes the importance of economic freedom for individuals and businesses, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Continuous reform implementation by both union and state governments is deemed necessary for fast-tracking economic growth through regulatory rationalization.
