UPSC Civil Services Syllabus

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) annually to select candidates for prestigious services like the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS), among others. The examination consists of three stages: Preliminary Examination, Mains Examination, and Personality Test (Interview).
1. UPSC Prelims Syllabus
The Preliminary Examination serves as a screening test and comprises two objective-type papers:
Paper I: General Studies (GS-I)
- Current events of national and international importance
- History of India and the Indian National Movement
- Indian and World Geography (Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World)
- Indian Polity and Governance (Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.)
- Economic and Social Development (Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.)
- Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change
- General Science
Paper II: CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) – GS-II (Qualifying in nature, requires 33% marks)
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision-making and problem-solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy and data interpretation (Class X level)
2. UPSC Mains Syllabus
Candidates who clear Prelims qualify for the Mains Examination, which consists of nine descriptive papers, out of which two are qualifying in nature.
Qualifying Papers:
- Paper A: Indian Language (Any of the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution)
- Paper B: English
Compulsory Papers:
- Paper I: Essay (Candidates may have to write essays on multiple topics)
- Paper II: General Studies I (History, Geography, Society, Art & Culture)
- Paper III: General Studies II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, International Relations)
- Paper IV: General Studies III (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Security, Disaster Management)
- Paper V: General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude)
- Paper VI & VII: Optional Subject (Candidates choose one optional subject with two papers)

3. UPSC Interview (Personality Test)
The final stage of the UPSC exam is the Personality Test (Interview), which carries 275 marks. This stage assesses:
